As mentioned a couple posts ago, Northern Voice was this past weekend and Reilly and I both spoke at Photocamp. It’s *so hard* to try to figure out what to possibly cover in 15 minutes, but we settled on lighting and split it up into two tidy packages and put together our stuff.

My presentation on natural lighting was fairly universal – anyone with a camera from point and shoot to full dSLR and gear could probably get something out of it. Conveniently, if you weren’t there, the whole thing complete with slides and video and all has been put up on the web and can be watched online.

Reilly’s presentation is also online and focuses on more advanced flash use and is probably more interesting to the serious amateur or for pros who haven’t spent a lot of time focussing on lighting, but totally worth checking out. That’s here.

We’ve had a tonne of fabulous feedback from those who came out to hear us speak, and we’ve had requests to get the links out there, so enjoy!

Reilly and I were excited to be a part of Veil this weekend – a small, invite only, cocktail reception at a private gallery for brides and grooms in the planning stages of their upcoming weddings. We joined a handful of great vendors for an afternoon of visiting with couples over glasses of wine and served canapes. Thanks to everyone who came out, it was great to see so many familiar faces!

Based on the success of the show and wonderful feedback, we are planning to make this a twice yearly event with the next date scheduled likely in September or October. Watch our site for full details on the next event later this year!

Be sure to check out the sites of all the great vendors who participated -

Marliss Productions Videography, WED Bridal, Uniquity Design, Bloom Room, April Cakes, Hot Wax DJs, Milestone Events, Erin Gilmore Photography, Hayley Miller Makeup Artist, Travel by Design, Lolo Jewellry, and us of course – Blue Olive Photography!

Reilly and I are excited to be heading over to Northern Voice today and tomorrow. Northern Voice is a blogging and social media conference in its fourth year, and is being hosted at UBC.

We’re particularly excited about the Photocamp session this afternoon as we’ll both be speaking and sharing a few tips and tricks for taking great, natural portraits – I’ll be covering working with natural and found lighting, and Reilly will be addressing the use of flash and other modified light.

If you have interest in blogging and social media be sure to bookmark the site and watch for the announcement next year. It’s not to be missed!
Have a great Friday everyone!

Amber & Shane are getting married in September at the Brock House!

They call Yaletown home so we headed to their neighbourhood for a few engagement pictures on Sunday in the gorgeous sun and warm weather.

Looking forward to the wedding! You guys are awesome in front of the camera – we can’t wait for the wedding day pics!

I am working furiously on the new Blue Olive website. It is gorgeous. Stunning. You are all going to love it. I can’t wait for you to see it! I keep wanting to post pictures of the design, but then I never was one for being patient, and it would ruin the surprise. Oh, surprise! Surprises are fun. Keep your eyes on this space for the big announcement in the coming weeks!

Hope everyone had a FANTASTIC valentine’s day yesterday, and to all the gals newly engaged, good to have you and get in touch as soon as you start to think about the date! If my web stats are any indication, there was a lot of love going around yesterday ;)

xoxoxo

We met up with Vicky & Dave over the weekend for their engagement photos. We completely lucked out with spectacular skies! We chased the sun around for a while and captured some great stuff with the city lit behind them in addition to hitting the beach and a couple urban spots. Love it!

Some of my fav images were for a project for the wedding, but I’m keeping those ones hush hush so the guests will be the first to see them. I’ll share those after the wedding in June :)

Take care, guys! Chat soon!

On the topic of news, one of our photos along with a great article on Cinnamon & Galib’s wedding is currently out in the January 17th issue of the Georgia Straight! We were honoured when contacted by the reporter looking to feature our work, and these two were the perfect couple for the story.

I just went through the process of applying for renewal and being accepted for another year with the WPJA (Wedding Photojournalist Association). I was talking about it with someone recently and mentioned that I had 2 images place in the contests this year – and was reminded that winning awards doesn’t actually mean anything if I don’t tell people it happened, and to stop being so modest :)

While we’ve been having a great time lately with really unique and fun portraits, the core of what we do has always been capturing moments. The real stuff – the tears, the looks, the excited tension in the room while the girls are getting the last of their makeup done. The kind of images that cause people to laugh spontaneously or tear up when they see them, in some cases when they don’t even know the couple. That is the root of what we do.

The two images that I had place are definitely on the lighter side of things as make-you-laugh real moments, and the judges seemed to enjoy them! These images placed 3rd and 4th respectively in their categories earlier this year from hundreds of submissions.

Brian Noppe Photo - Wed Bridal opening

On Thursday this week we had the chance to head over to the vendor kick off party at WED Bridal. In one word, WOW!

WED is Vancouver’s newest bridal store with hot hot gowns and a great atmosphere. They have large private rooms for you to change in with plenty of room for your closest girlfriends to hang out with you to see the show. Needless to say, I *highly* recommend giving Jo-Anne & Gemma a shout when you’re on the hunt for the perfect dress!

It was nice to see so many of our favourite vendors and to meet a few new folks, too.  We left our camera at home, but Brian Noppe took these great shots! Thanks Brian for being the photographer for the rest of us ;) Check out Brian’s fantastic work at his site and see more of his WED kick off pics on his blog.

Cheers!
