I know I’m not supposed to play favourites, but we’re talking old school 50’s style rock and roll wedding here! Eeeeeeeee! The details alone are going to make up an entire blog post – I can see it now

Their invites were done on records. RECORDS! Let me show you –

We headed out for an ULTRA SECRET SNEAKY ENGAGEMENT SHOOT yesterday, so you’ll have to wait until after the wedding to see the goods. Here’s a cute shot of them when we stopped for dinner, though –

Oh, and an old school polaroid, too, for good measure 🙂

More to come, the minute I can share! End of August!

Tara & Eddie

Tara and Eddie tied the knot on Sunday at the Celebration Pavilion in Queen E Park. After, we headed to the beach at Stanley Park for some pictures before arriving at the Heritage Hall for the reception. A quick walk around the block and into the alleys with the newlyweds completed our photo session that day! We had such a great time with them and their bridal party, and the reception was full of touching speeches, lots of laughter and dancing, and the warmth of so many friends and family. What a way to celebrate Canada Day!

Cheryl & Corey came to Vancouver this weekend from their home in San Francisco for their wedding! The Pan Pacific was the perfect backdrop for their reception following their church ceremony and pictures in a park, on the beach, and in Coal Harbour.

There were so many unique details that I haven’t even touched on sharing here – gorgeous flowers and decor, a lion dance for an entrance, a tea ceremony, Filipino dancers, the list goes on! I couldn’t decide which images to share, but I settled on a few and will leave the best for the highlights slideshow to come 🙂

Congratulations again, guys!

Long Weekend Engagement Sessions

bop Wedding Photography Leave a Comment

This weekend held two weddings and two great engagement sessions for us!

First up on Friday night we met up with Jennifer & Colin at Jericho for a walk on the beach. The weather had threatened to continue raining but held off, allowing not only some great images but an almost empty beach! These two are getting married in August at Brock House, so we’ll be back again soon

And then, after our weddings on Saturday and Sunday (pics to come shortly!), we met up with Marsha and Cuong on Monday morning. They will be getting married next month in Edmonton but were in town for a friend’s wedding, making the perfect opportunity to grab some photos of their own

Engagement Sessions

bop Engagement Photography 1 Comment

We include an engagement session with every wedding package because we love the opportunity they afford us to spend time with and to get to know our clients before each wedding! We choose locations that are relevant and meaningful to people, and we literally laugh and play for the entire time. Being on the other side of a camera is SUPPOSED to be fun, and that’s what we strive to do!

We’ve done an absolute pile of sessions lately and so this is one massive post to share something from each one. Terry & Preeti are getting married in Victoria next month, and we chose the site of their first date as the start of their engagement session. Between the Alibi Room and then a mini road trip up to the Cleveland Dam for the mountains and skies, these images were a tonne of fun to create. Their personalities truly shone through in each image we captured!

Wes & Sandy will be getting married next month and had one request for their engagement session – fields. Well, where else to find photo worthy fields but out past Mission? They were game so they hopped in our car and we headed out for a road trip photo session! Our amazing skies graced us once more for these images – they truly are spectacular. Thanks, guys, for trusting us that the perfect spot was just over another hill! We are looking forward to seeing you again next month.

Rob & Jill were featured just a few days ago for their Sooke Harbour House wedding. We headed out a few weeks ago for their engagement session along the seawall and at the beach, both places they’ve enjoyed spending time at. It was great to get to know them more before their wedding, and to get some great images at the same time.

Sahar & Chris were also featured this week for their wedding on Saturday. A few weeks ago we took photos near their new home by UBC as they are right across the street from Pacific Spirit Park. I loved that we could walk out their door and right into the park, which is the perfect way to escape when needed! They look so happy together!

Jose & Kristin were married earlier this month as well and we headed out to Iona Park with them for something different. The park is so wonderful – quiet and secluded, and yet full of amazing photo opportunities! We almost had a disaster as we got back to the cars and realized a set of keys was missing, but despite how big the park was we found them right away, so we all did get to go home after all 🙂

Deanna & Jimmy are getting married in Ucluelet in September! Jimmy works in the skateboarding industry, so a skate park was the perfect start to their engagement session. Rumour has it that their wedding venue was also chosen based on its proximity to the local skate park, so even though it’s a couple months away we are really excited about those getting ready photos with the guys! (unlike the gals who are busy with hair and makeup all morning, the guys tend to do anything but get ready 😉

Cheryl & Corey will be getting married this weekend. They travelled from their home in San Francisco recently for their engagement session with us here in Gastown. We had a lot of fun playing with the architecture, and ensured that their pictures reflect a little piece of Vancouver now that they live so far away and miss the city!

And, finally, Rebecca & Joey will be getting married later this summer and we were able to hook up with them this week. Joey lives in San Diego and doesn’t come to Vancouver often, so we enjoyed finally getting to meet him. These guys were a blast! We had a lot of fun and are definitely looking forward to seeing them again for the wedding!

Sahar & Chris

Sahar & Chris were married on Saturday at the new Celebration Pavilion in Queen Elizabeth park, and they held their reception there at Seasons Restaurant.

Sahar was the perfect classic bride – I loved how she had her hair done and her dresses (one for the day, and one to dance in!) were classic and gorgeous to match!

They chose for their photos to be of just them which afforded us lots of time to drive around the city with their classic Rolls Royce grabbing photos wherever we went.

A few minutes after their first look, here they are on the couch in their new home by UBC

I really loved that they used stones for their guestbook, allowing guests to write well wishes with a permanent gold marker. These are fantastic as they can be displayed in so many ways and in so many places in their home, and will be enjoyed I think more than a book that seldom gets opened.

Also, they chose to decorate their tables with the simple flower arrangements shown but more importantly with pictures they had taken from their many overseas trips to the countries featured on each one. Family and friends at the table were able to look through the photos and share the stories they had heard from the couple about each trip, and guests were encouraged to take any pictures that they really enjoyed.

And finally, getting to know both Sahar and Chris we really got to see the fun loving spirit they share. On that note, I think that this non traditional cake feeding shot shows a tonne of personality!

Congratulations again, guys! It was an honour to celebrate with you. See you after your honeymoon!

Rob & Jill

Last weekend we travelled to the Sooke Harbour House on Vancouver Island for our 3rd destination event in a row! Rob & Jill travelled there with their close family and friends for their weekend away. What I love most about their choice in location is that it will be the perfect place to escape to for years to come for their anniversaries! The perfect retreat.

A few of our favourites so far – first, the flower girls!

BE PROUD. I’m your grad.

In November 2004 we had what might prove to be the strangest random instant message conversation that we’ll ever have. It started with something along the lines of “you don’t know me” and ended with “sure, you can come stay at our home and studio for a week.”

John was 18 at the time and just out of high school in Ontario. We were living in Alberta then and while I was 6 years older, I knew where he was coming from. While most messages from strangers online end up in the trash, John knew how to get my attention – it was about a girl. And a love story. And he didn’t know how it would turn out, but he needed to try and if that meant flying across the country to give it a shot, that’s what he was going to do.

I asked him why he didn’t want to just stay in a hostel, and he told me that hostels scared him. I asked him how hostels could possibly be any more scary than staying with random strangers he found online, and he replied that he wouldn’t be staying with strangers, he would be staying with photographers whose work he appreciated. And so, we gave him that chance.

We enjoyed spending the week with John and having him shoot with us and play around in the studio while he was here. We’ve kept in touch since then and this week I got the best message from him ever.

Along with his grad photos (he’s completed his diploma in photography from Georgian College!), he simply said “BE PROUD. You did this to me.”

Which, of course, made me cry instantly.

Life works in mysterious ways. The thing with the girl never did work out, but John says spending those days with us and watching us shoot and work together inspired him to go into photography as a career. I’m thrilled that he found inspiration in what we do, but I know how much work he put into getting that piece of paper and it was most definitely all him.

I love watching him grow as a photographer and I look forward to the new stuff he sends me every week as we talk about what he’s doing and what he’s going to try next. I can’t wait to see where it all leads.

CONGRATULATIONS, John! We are so very proud of everything you’ve accomplished!
