Carla & Jamie’s Alpine Meadows Resort Wedding

bop Wedding Photography 1 Comment

Carla & Jamie are so laid back and easy to get along with, and when they described their wedding venue it fit them to a T.

In the middle of nowhere… room for everyone to stay for the weekend… fit for a party under the gorgeous summer skies. Perfect.

Alpine Meadows Resort is a new property, and it sits roughly between Barriere and Clearwater, an hour or so north of Kamloops. Well, that is of course if the ferry is open – when I say that this place is tucked away, I mean it! The quickest route takes you on a fit-for-3 (at most!)  ferry ride across a river, and as it’s only got one operator it’s closed for lunch and he heads home around 6pm, necessitating a longer drive around. The fun is all in the trip however, so here’s a peak at our ferry adventure on the way –

Looking forward – like many of the guests – to a weekend away, we loaded up the truck with all of our gear, picked up Shari, and headed on our way. Once we arrived we were stunned with this property – brand new, complete with an on site restaurant and super nice cottages with large balconies for lazy evenings watching the sun set and catching a glimpse at the stars (which you forget are even there when you spend so much time in the city!)

The wedding itself was exactly what they wanted – laid back, a celebration, set in a beatiful location.

No one could have asked for anything more! Cheers, guys!

Lillian Alling – Vancouver Opera World Premiere!

bop Wedding Photography 4 Comments

I’m super excited to be blogging tonight from the Queen Elizabeth Theatre for the world premiere of Lillian Alling by the Vancouver Opera! Some of you may remember my blog post last year from Rigoletto, and this year I’m back for opening night of the 2010/11 season.

What the heck does the Opera have to do with what we do, you might ask? Easy!

  • Appreciation of the arts spans all forms. Whether it’s pretty pictures in the still variety or the gorgeous moving images that dance across the stage, it’s all art. And the voices! That’s not even getting into the incredible talent of these ladies and gents
  • The costumes, on and off stage! Why dress up just for the wedding day when you can get dolled up over and over again for a night out at the Opera? Seriously, what better place to take that birdcage veil out for a night on the town, or to kick it up in those seldom enjoyed Louboutins. You should see the shoes! I’m tempted to start shooting the footwear alone.
  • And of course, we have a sophisticated audience of mostly Vancouver based couples who have – by virtue of the fact that you’re at our site! – an interest in and appreciation for the arts. Having had my eyes opened to the Vancouver Opera last year, I can’t speak highly enough of the experience and I really want to share it with each of you!

So, now that that’s out of the way, let’s get on with things.

Lillian Alling is a true Canadian production – commissioned by the Vancouver Opera and produced in conjunction with the Banff Centre, Lillian Alling is a show that takes place across North America. Not to be shy with their world premiere, the Vancouver Opera has pulled all stops to produce a contemporary opera that is both artistically and technically breathtaking.

My visual side loves the fact that much of the set and scenery is created using projection of both moving and still imagery – the perfect way to balance multiple scenes across multiple locations. Massive projectors back stage are put to the task of filling the scenes with colour and place.

Unlike many of the shows put on by the Vancouver Opera – this opera is in English. Prior to attending my first opera I didn’t have a clue why anyone would sit through an entire story in a language they don’t understand, but this was before I was made aware of the biggest factor that should have any opera newbie lining up for tickets to the next show (in English or any other language) – the show is subtitled! Well, actually, they’re surtitled, with a readerboard at the top of the stage. Nevertheless the result is the same – enjoy the beautiful voices and the gorgeous moving imagery across the stage AND have the luxury of understanding every world. Brilliant. Why the heck did I not know this?!

I don’t want to get into too much of the story as I really am a believer in being surprised as you go, but I will share this – Lillian Alling the opera is based on the story of Lillian Alling the woman,  an immigrant from Russia who came to North America in the 20s. Legend has it that she decided, while in New York, to walk home to Russia via Canada, though little is truly known about her and what became of her. Loosely based on her travels, this new work spins a story around her journey and ultimate motivations, bringing life to the legend as the story unfolds. The story is touching, beautifully performed, and ended in a very very well deserved standing ovation by the teary eyed (including the men, although they mostly tried to hide it) crowd on opening night.

Lillian Alling plays in Vancouver again on October 19th, 21st, and 23rd with tickets still available. Whether you’ve never been or are a regular, this is an opera not to be missed!

Nicole & Aniz’s UBC Boathouse Wedding

It’s so rare that we get those fluffy prairie-like clouds here in Vancouver, but it’s such a treat when we do! And truly, no one deserved such a gorgeous day more than these two.

We first met with them last summer when the plans were just taking shape, and even hopped over to the island for a Victoria engagement session.

We see a lot of design and decor, but I loved.loved.loved. what Nicole dreamt up (with a little execution help by Party Art Design, of course). The perfect example of keeping thing simple in the most beautiful way – that cake table was probably the best one I’ve ever seen, the photos just can’t do it justice!

The girls were stunning all in Vera Wang, DreamGroup did their thing to keep everything running smoothly, Brent Sheppard officiated with humour and grace as he always does, and Shari (a fairly permanent fixture these days on our team!) joined us and rocked it Blue Olive style.

The Boathouse never looked so good!

Terri-Lynn & John’s Seasons Restaurant Wedding

I kind of love these guys a lot 😉

Terri-Lynn is simply stunning, and combined with John who has an incredible sense of humour (confirmed by his antics during the reception – John’s a reporter and put together a fake broadcast that had everyone in stitches!) they make a fabulous pair. They were also a blast to shoot, which is always a good thing.

Next up is the album – I can’t wait to see everything in print!

Shari joined our crew of course and we were excited to work with our good friends Andrea & Rob over at Lotus Events for coordination of the Celebration Pavilion & Seasons Restaurant wedding, with a nod to Oasis for the flowers and Cupcakes for the treats!

Navrup & Garrick’s La Terrazza Wedding

bop Wedding Photography 1 Comment

We first started chatting with Nav last August when the plans were starting to come together. I love it when our couples are able to pull traditions from multiple cultures… in this case it was blending a more traditional Sikh ceremony with a Chinese tea ceremony to honour Garrick’s family followed by a gorgeous, upscale Western reception! Nav & Garrick were married in Richmond followed by an amazing reception at La Terrazza in Yaletown.

Following their engagement session we were super excited to meet up with these guys on their wedding day, and I loved how everything came together. La Terrazza especially was an incredible venue, with crazy delish family style Italian food for a large, celebrating family!

A huge group of our favourite people came together for this one… Shari of course for our team, Kathy & Steph at Marliss Productions for video, Kerry from Fairy Godmother for day of coordination, Ganache for the incredible cake, and Kathleen from Proline on decor.
